Individual presence

Flash interview with Rita Góbi

Individual presence

Hungarian Cultural Institute in Sofia

1. When and how did you choose this career? If you could start your life over, would you choose the same path?

As a child, I was captivated by the freedom and playfulness of dance, and by the presence and importance of individuality. In my life, dance has always played the leading role, so I never imagine my path any other way.

2. What are you most proud of in your career?

I am often surprised that the more I work, the stronger my motivation, creativity, perseverance, focus, and love become. I am deeply grateful that the creative process — the state of flow — can be with me every day. It allows me to observe both outward and inward at the same time.

3. What does an average day look like for you?

I have chosen a path full of change. Because of traveling, morning children's performances, teaching, leading trainings, and starting rehearsals, I have to wake up early — but when I can, I enjoy sleeping long. The sleep cycles are important so I can function in a balanced way. In some phases of sleep I discover, see, and edit the pieces; in other phases I regenerate and rest.

4. How do you spend your free time, how do you recharge?

I like to connect with my partner’s presence, with nature, and with silence…

5. What advice would you give to a young beginner in the field?

I encourage them to be brave, persistent, and dedicated to developing their individuality.

6. Have you been to Bulgaria before? What memories, impressions, or stories come to mind about the country?

I owe every journey to the nonverbal art of dance. My first trip to Bulgaria took place at the end of March 2018, when a snowy, white, winter landscape awaited me. At that time, the international organization Aerowaves invited my solo dance piece Reptében (Aerowaves Twenty18 – priority artist). At this event, I met many international colleagues, organizations, and festival directors, and thanks to these encounters, I experienced an intense series of tours in the years that followed. In 2022, I had the chance to travel to another city, Plovdiv, to perform at the Black Box Festival. I remember the team traveled from Budapest by car, while I flew from Milan to Plovdiv. As we returned home with good memories, I hope we will have the opportunity to collaborate again.

Rita Góbi and her company, the Rita Gobi Dance Company, will perform their piece Vibration on October 13 as part of the Alter Ego International Theatre Festival.
